Audi Auto Group has been gearing up to make an ever larger presence in the United States and with our neighbors. Although still a Volkswagen in drag, the Audi lineup is certainly taking it’s time to doll itself up for foreign markets and he/she is starting to look more like the opposite sex and surprise more buyers.
This Audi A3 is going to be the introductory model based on the VW/Audi A-Chassis. The chassis setup is able to accept a multitude of powertrain options as well as FWD, RWD, AWD setup. Although the chassis may not be the most rigid on the market, it still certainly delivers a platform for some spirited driving. As for the U.S. market, we are still holding our breath to see what all goodies come from overseas. As of right now it looks to be coming with the 1.8L turbo 4-cylinder that produces around 170hp. News of a hyped up engine option seems to be vague and untrustworthy as some mention the larger 2.0L that produces 200hp. Although we would like to see the S3’s 265hp being a mid-level option or a VR6, we doubt it.
For diesel fans such as myself, we will be getting the tried 2.0TDI that throws down around 236 lb-ft of torque. Although not as fun to drive as the gas model, the mileage factor as well as the fact that you can run on French fry oil makes you seem like an environmentalist next time you’re caught creeping in a McNasty’s parking lot. For Hybrid and Electric variants, it seems that we will have a plug-in hybrid version that will have an estimated 40 plus mile range on nothing but electric and then with the help of a gasoline engine with regenerative brake power assist. As for now it looks as if all manuals are staying back in the homeland as we only receive the 6-speed dual clutch transmission. Although still fun and good at launches, this tranny needs to be accompanied by a rod.
The techno junkies will find some peace with the fact that Audi wants the 2015 A3 to debut its 4G LTE infotainment center that will use Apple navigation to get you totally fucking lost. Kidding, Google Maps will be there to give you up to date information as well as track your every move so they can send you STD crème ads for when you visit a brothel and a Walgreens in the same week. For efficiency, the Audi A3 2015 model will be chalked full of nothing but LED’s as interior lights, brake lights, and even headlights will be able enable the Knight Rider flashing beam.
In conclusion the 2015 Audi A3 looks to be a very attractive car that seems to be similar to the A4 (B5-model). As new generations of cars get bigger, there is always a compact entry that has to rekindle our love for previous model years. For competition it looks to be between the Mercedes-Benz CLA 250, a possible BMW 2-Series (116i) later on and Cadillac ATS. I do fear for Cadillac as many buyers in this field will want foreign image over American substance.
